PFRDA Allows OTP-Based Authentication for Paperless NPS Onboarding
As per a circular issued on January 2, 2026, applicants can now authenticate their online NPS registration forms either through e-signature or One-Time Password (OTP) received on their registered mobile number. This move is aimed at making the NPS account opening process more convenient, faster, and completely digital.
The authority clarified that all mandatory declarations and consent required for opening an NPS account must be obtained at the end of the online registration journey, using either e-sign or mobile OTP authentication.
This circular partially modifies the earlier PFRDA circular dated June 15, 2020, which had initially permitted digital submission of NPS account opening applications.
PFRDA has advised Central Recordkeeping Agencies (CRAs) and Points of Presence (POPs) to align their systems and onboarding processes in line with the updated guidelines.
The step is expected to enhance ease of access, reduce paperwork, and promote wider adoption of the National Pension System among subscribers.
